Opening address at the inauguration of the Basque Centre in Djúpavík, Iceland. The talk focused on the history of Basque whaling in the waters off Iceland and the need to know and understand our history in all its complexity.
The final words were as follows:
“Ignorance begets suspicion; suspicion begets fear; fear begets hatred; hatred begets horror and harm. We must end this vicious circle and start instead with curioisity which generates knowledge; knowledge generates understanding; understanding generates sympathy; and sympathy generates love. And all you need is love.”
